TEACHING STAFF

Faculty members teaching in the MSc Programme:

Programme Director Professor Dimitris Charitos is Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies and in the Department of Digital Arts and Cinema of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he teaches human–machine communication, interaction design, digital art, virtual environment design and visual communication. He studied architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and at the University of Strathclyde (CAD) and holds a doctoral degree in the design of interactive and virtual environments. He has participated in more than 15 research projects and has more than 100 publications in books, journals and conference proceedings. His artistic practice includes electronic music (1983–1993), audiovisual and interactive installations, and virtual environments (1997–present). He has participated in 15 exhibitions in Greece, the United Kingdom and Cyprus.

Professor Stelios Papathanassopoulos is Professor in the field of Media Organization and Policy in the Department of Communication and Media Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is Director of the Laboratory of Journalism Studies and Communication Applications of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, has authored numerous books and scholarly works in Greece and abroad, and has journalistic experience. He is Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Communication Issues and is a member of the editorial board of the academic journals European Journal of Communication, Digital Media & Policy, Social Media and Society and Journalism Practice. He directs the series “Communication and Society” at Kastaniotis Publications and the series Media and Political Communication at Springer.

Professor Konstantinos Mourlas is Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and has also served as Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, Germany (15 March 2012 – 15 July 2012) and Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus (November 1998 – October 2002). His research interests focus mainly on the study of intelligent systems and more specifically on adaptive and personalized communication environments. His research work (more than 80 papers) has been published in international conferences and academic journals, as well as in chapters of scholarly books in the broader scientific field.

Associate Professor Athanasios Tsevas: Field: “Public Law with Emphasis on Communication and Media Law”. He is a legal scholar and has extensive writing and research work. His research interests focus on Media Law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, European Union Law, and Fundamental Rights. More specifically, among other things: safeguarding pluralism, protection of personality rights and especially private life, personal data, protection of minors, regulation of print and electronic media, Independent Authorities, judicial review, public contracts, regulation of the production of reliable official statistics, addressing the sovereign debt crisis, and fiscal discipline.

Assistant Professor Antonis Armenakis: Field: “Methods and Techniques in Communication Research”. He studied Applied Mathematics at the University of Ioannina and pursued postgraduate studies, MSc and PhD in Statistics, at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada. He served as Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNB. He has worked as a statistical consultant in the private sector and as a researcher at the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE). He has many years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as extensive research and writing work. His research interests focus on research methodology and statistical data processing and analysis.

Assistant Professor Marina Rigou: Field: “Journalism and New Media”. Her research interests focus on new media, privacy and freedom of expression in new media, journalism (radio and multimedia journalism, European, political and diplomatic reporting, international reporting, data journalism, etc.), artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, journalistic ethics, the public sphere, radio, multimedia, media, politics, political communication, and e-governance. She has worked as a journalist and has extensive writing and research work.

Assistant Professor Anthi Sidiropoulou: is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in communication psychology with emphasis on cyberpsychology. Her postdoctoral research focused on digital psychotools, the emotional investments contemporary people make in them, and the cognitive and social transformations these investments bring about. She is a member of the Hellenic Psychological Society and the Hellenic Sociological Society. She is also assistant editor of the journal Psychology of the Hellenic Psychological Society and a member of the scientific editorial team of the journal Automaton. She has presented papers at conferences, edited collective volumes and academic handbooks, and is co-editor of the series “Cyberpsychology and Society” (Papazisis Publications). She is the author of the book Psychological Paths in the Digital Age: From Multitasking to the Multi-Activity of Existence (Papazisis Publications, 2019).

Assistant Professor Katerina Stavrianea: Field: Advertising Communication and Public Relations. She completed postgraduate studies (M.Sc.) in Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University (Chicago, USA) and holds a doctoral degree from the Athens University of Economics and Business. Her articles have been published in recognized international academic journals as well as in peer-reviewed edited volumes and have been presented at international academic conferences. Her research interests focus on issues of corporate reputation, advertising communication and public relations in the digital environment, customer experience, consumer engagement, corporate social responsibility, as well as issues of social marketing.

Scientific Personnel

Achilleas Karadimitriou, Assistant Professor of Journalism and News Content Production in the Department of Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University. He has conducted postdoctoral research on the digital platforms of public service media (Department of Communication and Media Studies, NKUA), completed a doctoral dissertation on public broadcasting policy in Europe and Greece (Department of Communication and Media Studies, NKUA), pursued postgraduate studies in television production and news in the United Kingdom (Aberystwyth University), and has been a research associate of the Department of Communication and Media Studies since 2010. At the same time, he works as a journalist / fact-checker on the platform Check4facts.gr with the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) as the lead institution, and is co-creator and scientific coordinator of the website politikometro.gr. He is the author of many articles on journalism and the media and has long-standing experience in media research.

Ilias Athanasiadis, PhD holder from the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, holder of a Master of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He is currently Head of the Communication Department of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority. He has long-standing experience as a research associate in the field of political communication and has taught as an academic fellow at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition, he has taught in the programme “Communication and New Journalism” of the Open University of Cyprus.

Sonia Chaimanta, journalist, Director of Corporate Affairs/Communication at IAB Hellas and lecturer under PD 407 at the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. At the same time, for 20 years she has been involved in communication crisis management, research and consulting. She has collaborated with many media outlets {Editorial Director at the digital media company DPG of the D. Giannakopoulos group (CNN, Newsbomb, etc.), Imerisia, Ethnos, Eleftheros Typos, Athina 984, Alter, ERT, etc.}. She is scientific coordinator of the ESIEA seminars on Digital Media. She currently writes for Ad Business and advertising.gr. In 2016 she received the Botsis Award (Journalism and New Technologies).

Penny Papageorgopoulou, PhD holder from the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is a computer scientist, with emphasis on the study of new media. In 2024, she successfully completed her doctoral research on Human–Computer Interaction, and more specifically embodied computing, in the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the University of Athens. In 2015, she received a postgraduate degree in Digital Media Communication and Interactive Environments from the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 2008, she received her degree from the Department of Telecommunications Science and Technology of the University of the Peloponnese.
